FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (October 12, 2010)—After two years of introspection and incubation, Emily Asen announces the release of her new album To The Marrow on her independent label, Violet Maiden Records.
With her second full-length album, Emily Asen has carved out a soft spot between the warm melodies of modern pop and the intimacy of traditional folk. While holding close to the signature acoustic, storytelling, and expressive nature of the genre, Emily’s unique instrumentation makes To The Marrow a folk album with a modern edge.
Inspired by the unassailable truths of the seasons, To The Marrow unravels intricate stories of love, loss, aching and mending told through Emily’s soulful arrangements. The result is a collection of ten original, contemplative tracks that tribute artists like Elliott Smith and Joni Mitchell in their unwavering honesty, yet ring true with Emily’s own unmistakable voice. As a coda to her original set of songs, Emily offers a haunting cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and an acoustic version of the album’s “Evergreen.”
To The Marrow also touches on the marriage equality issue with the socially-minded song “Under My Tongue.” Signaling her solidarity with the LGBT community, Emily will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the album during the month of October to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.
Emily recorded To The Marrow at her home studio in Fairfield, CT and helmed full control of the artistic process from initial concept to final artwork. Living up to her multi-instrumentalist reputation, she played nearly every instrument as well as mixed and produced the record. Dennis Arcano contributed drums and percussion, as well as piano, organ, and wurlitzer on “Under My Tongue.” Oscar and Grammy Award-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, whose credits include albums by Ingrid Michaelson, Ben Harper, and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, mastered the album.
