“TO THE MARROW” Updates!

The response to the new album has been so lovely and exciting. I can’t thank you guys enough for your support and for spreading the word to all of your friends and family.

Here are some UPDATES!

(1) Please read this very neat… and I must say VERY thorough review of TTM.

(2) I am so incredibly grateful for your support and I know that all of you care about the issue of equality as much as I do. So in the spirit of the holiday season, I am continuing my pledge to donate a portion of the proceeds from all sales of the album “To The Marrow” and from the song “Under My Tongue” to the Human Rights Campaign through November 2010.

(3) New merch is coming in the next couple of weeks. Tees, hoodies, buttons galore. Pre-ordering will be available at the webstore. Check back for an update.

I am compelled to begin using my music to change the way our nation thinks and acts towards equality.

Last week I released a self-produced album titled To The Marrow. Recorded over the course of two years, and reflecting a sound that resonates somewhere between pop and folk, I have tried to bare my own personal truths with the hope that listeners will be inspired to bare their own.

One of the stories told through this album is about my own experience with—and my advocacy for—the issue of marriage equality. My partner and I have been together for over five years. While we don’t expect that a marriage certificate will affect our commitment to each other, we do expect our relationship to be recognized by any hospital nurse, police officer, bank teller, or insurance clerk that we encounter during our life together.

I wrote the song “Under My Tongue” to convey my frustration with people who do not understand the importance of this issue and that, until it is resolved, we will continue to feel like outsiders. The song also touches on the patience and humility that our community sustains as we wait for the day we are truly treated equally. I can see that our community and our allies are growing, and I am confident that the day will come.

Until that day does come, I want to add my voice to the chorus of support for marriage equality: I pledge to donate a portion of proceeds from all sales of the album and from the song “Under My Tongue” to the Human Rights Campaign during the month of October.

You can listen to (and share) the song at http://bit.ly/emilyhrc.

Please repost this message and video everywhere you can.  I don’t have a publicist or record label helping me out.  But who needs them when I’ve got YOU guys.  Help me spread the word.

Much Love,

Emily

To The Marrow - Press Release

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (October 12, 2010)—After two years of introspection and incubation, Emily Asen announces the release of her new album To The Marrow on her independent label, Violet Maiden Records.

With her second full-length album, Emily Asen has carved out a soft spot between the warm melodies of modern pop and the intimacy of traditional folk. While holding close to the signature acoustic, storytelling, and expressive nature of the genre, Emily’s unique instrumentation makes To The Marrow a folk album with a modern edge.

Inspired by the unassailable truths of the seasons, To The Marrow unravels intricate stories of love, loss, aching and mending told through Emily’s soulful arrangements. The result is a collection of ten original, contemplative tracks that tribute artists like Elliott Smith and Joni Mitchell in their unwavering honesty, yet ring true with Emily’s own unmistakable voice. As a coda to her original set of songs, Emily offers a haunting cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and an acoustic version of the album’s “Evergreen.”

To The Marrow also touches on the marriage equality issue with the socially-minded song “Under My Tongue.” Signaling her solidarity with the LGBT community, Emily will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the album during the month of October to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.

Emily recorded To The Marrow at her home studio in Fairfield, CT and helmed full control of the artistic process from initial concept to final artwork. Living up to her multi-instrumentalist reputation, she played nearly every instrument as well as mixed and produced the record. Dennis Arcano contributed drums and percussion, as well as piano, organ, and wurlitzer on “Under My Tongue.”  Oscar and Grammy Award-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, whose credits include albums by Ingrid Michaelson, Ben Harper, and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, mastered the album.
